KTPM: Okay, so my name is Caitlin, I’m with Keep The Peace Media. Thank you so much for sitting down with me on short notice.
Jersey Moriarty: No problem, thanks for having us!
KTPM: No problem whatsoever. Let’s start this off with introducing yourselves.
JM: My name is Jersey, and I play bass for Hey Monday.
Alex Lipshaw: I’m Alex, and I play guitar for Hey Monday.
KTPM: Okay I’m just going to ask you some generic questions about tour and your band and whatnot, then we can get into fun stuff.
JM: Cool, juicy stuff?
KTPM: Yup. I know you guys probably get asked this all the time but how did Hey Monday get hooked up with Pete and Decaydance?
JM: Well, Cassadee and Mike had been writing music together, and Columbia showed interest. Basically our A&R guy from Columbia was in touch with Cassadee and Mike and he brought the old demos that they had into Crush Management or Ozone Management, Fall Out Boy’s also on Crush Management. Pete just happened to be in the management office one day when our manager was playing it for someone else. He heard it and said he wanted to work with it. And basically Columbia had already shown interest so that’s pretty much what brought the whole Decaydance/Columbia thing together.
KTPM: Honestly how excited are you for your first headlining tour?
JM: SO EXCITED!
KTPM: Do you think it’s sunk in yet?
JM: I don’t think it ever will. Like a lot of our other tours, it’s just like, you know you wake up every day and you can’t believe it’s still happening. Right now, I mean, we’re out on the road with all of these bands that we’ve all had previous experiences with. And that’s really what we were kind of looking for in a headlining tour. Being able to go out with these bands that we’ve all already had those good experiences with, knowing that there wouldn’t be any awkward moments or getting used to. We just knew everyone before this so; we’ve just never done anything with anyone on this tour in a larger scale before, like a long term thing. So that’s why we thought it would be great to take bands that we’ve had fun with before on the road.
KTPM: So do you guys have any plans for the fall yet? Any tours? Or were you going to try to get back into the studio any time soon?
JM: Well, studio is kind of out of the questions right now. We’re hoping to ride this record a little longer. Because you know, I mean it’s still… it’s not even a year old yet. And still even when it hits a year old, the first year of touring is just too sort of get it out there. So hopefully we can get it out there enough to then actually make use of what’s on it.
KTPM: Yeah because I remember you guys coming to San Fransisco with The Academy Is… and your record had just come out like two weeks before.
JM: Oh yeah! That was an awesome show! What was that, the Regency Ballroom?
KTPM: Yeah, I think so...
JM: Positive?
KTPM:…yes, it was. I’m certain.
JM: [laughs] Alright then.
KTPM: Okay because I heard…there are a bunch of rumors floating around about an All Time Low headliner with…I think it was you, The Friday Night Boys, and We The Kings supporting.
JM: We’ve heard things. You know, it’s like nothing’s confirmed, there’s talks of tours all the time. I mean we love All Time Low. If they asked us to do anything it’s not even a question, it’s a yes. So, I mean if that works out that’d be great. But it’s just, too early to say ‘Yes. That’s happening.’ As much as I would love to say yes, you know.
KTPM: Yeah.
JM: Fingers crossed!
KTPM: Awsome. It doesn’t necessarily have to be this tour because obviously it just started but most ridiculous tour moment?
AL: Ridiculous? Hmmm….Oh! Probably, on the Fall Out Boy tour…who was it that had the fireworks?
JM: Ummm
AL: Was it All Time Low?
JM: We had some but they were small stuff. But All Time Low had like HUGE-
AL: These HUGE fireworks.
KTPM: They brought in the big guns?
AL: Yeah, exactly. They decided that…well everyone was at this huge party outside in the back by the buses. Someone decided to throw a Motor which is like this really, really big firework underneath a cone.
KTPM: Like a traffic cone?
AL: Yeah, and it just went absolutely crazy… it just exploded. That was a crazy night.
JM: It was nuts. We got in trouble with security.
AL: Off the top of my head, I’m trying to think…every day with those guys was pretty crazy.
JM: Yeah, it was pretty intense. I mean I’m trying to think of anything that was more intense than that. All Time Low used to have dance parties on their bus all the time, so those would always get out of hand…but in a good way. There was one night…I think it was in Dallas. I was going through my suitcase and…I don’t know, someone had a lighter. But Pete reached into my suitcase and grabbed the lighter and hairspray out of my suitcase and started making fire. Somehow it turned into, it was a little lighter and a can of hairspray that somehow turned into a grill lighter and a can of spray paint. I have absolutely no clue where the grill lighter and spray paint came from. But then it turned into me holding the flame while Pete sprayed the spray paint into the fire.
KTPM: So you guys basically had your very own homemade flamethrower?
JM: Yeah! It was just like that. I woke up the next morning and my hand was just black. It was really interesting I could have gotten my hand blown off.
AL: [laughs] Our bus could have blown up too.
KTPM: I don’t want to give you ideas…next time you get a hold of some cherry bombs try throwing them in water after you light them.
AL: Really? What happens?
KTPM: Long story short, my friend and I threw a red one in a tub of water-
JM: Oh jeeze…
KTPM: We came back into the house covered in red water from the explosion looking like we had killed someone.
AL: [laughs] That’s badass.
JM: Agreed!
KTPM: It really was. Anyway how did you guys go around picking who you wanted for support?
JM: Well, our management is pretty tight with The Friday Night Boys’ management, because The Friday Night Boys are under the same management as All Time Low. So we all just hooked up through that because we did the Christma-Hauna-Kwanzica Tour with All Time Low and The Friday Night Boys. Along with The Audition and Sparks The Rescue. So we got to meet them there, and that kind of started that friendship. Then Stereo Skyline is on the same management as us, so that was just kind of a match made in heaven because we love those guys. We were just dying to take them out or just be on the road with them. The Bigger Lights we toured with through Florida with There For Tomorrow. We only did four or five dates with them and we just became really good friends. This Providence we toured with on the Why So Serious Tour with The Cab. It just made sense because none of these bands were doing Warped Tour or had plans for when we wanted to do our headliner. So it was just kind of just ‘Hey let’s see who’s not doing anything’. And as it turned out all of these bands that we were friends with were free for it.
KTPM: You guys just got to travel the world with Fall Out Boy. What do you think was your favorite international show?
AL: Probably when we played in London at the O2 Arena. Because that was just like massive, it was the biggest show we have ever played. It was like 14,000 people.
KTPM: A song that you wish you could have written yourselves?
AL: Got one! ‘From Yesterday’ by 30 Seconds to Mars, I really like that song as of today.
JM: Honestly…I’m going to go with a hit. I’m going to say ‘MMBop’ by Hanson. I would have loved to have written that song.
AL: You would be rolling in money right now if you had written that.
JM: [laughs] Yeah I know!. But that’s not even why, I just love that song. I just do.
KTPM: Favorite song to play live?
AL: ‘How You Love Me Now’
JM: It changes a lot. It just depends on the venue and kids. We get different reactions to different songs. But lately ‘Homecoming’ and ‘How You Love Me Now’ have been getting the best response, because I guess they’re our two singles. But I’m really diggin’ ‘Homecoming’ right now. I kind of got sick of it at the beginning because it was our first single so we had to drill it. But it got to the point where we could concentrate on other songs more. So now being able to play ‘Homecoming’ which is a favorite song of a lot of people it just kind of sunk back in.
KTPM: If you could pick your dream line-up who would be on it?
AL: Well, let’s pretend that we’re really big…I would love to open for Blink, I think everyone would…who else?
JM: Well I think I have a different line-up. Not really a dream line-up it would just be really sweet fun line up.
AL: What’s yours?
JM: You go ahead and do yours then I’ll do mine.
AL: Okay well I would say, Blink headlining, All Time Low for direct support, us, and Stereo Skyline.
JM: Well this was something-
AL: DUDE! How sick would that line-up be? Seriously, it would just like pass over you, come on.
JM: Dude it great! Okay if we’re going to go that route I would say Blink 182, New Found Glory, The Starting Line and ourselves. (cue simultaneous “oos” and “awws” from Alex and KTPM)
KTPM: I know it’s not very easy to stay healthy on tour but what’s your favorite tour food?
JM: Depends on the country.
AL: The sushi in Japan was amazing
JM: Yeah, but as far as here I’m going to go with chicken nuggets and fish sticks. Because you can just get big packages of them for like $4 in change and just make it last for like 2 weeks, so it’s cheap, it’s affordable and it’s tasty.
KTPM: If you could go back in time for 24 hours what time would you go too.
JM: Ooooo.
KTPM: Weird question?
JM: No it’s a good question I’ve never been asked that before…ummm I would have to say…the 50’s.
AL: Probably…
JM: Well for me personally it’s either the 50’s or the medieval times.
AL: No, not the medieval times for me that’s too scary. Probably go back to when people were landing on the moon, because that was huge thing.
JM: That’s deep man.
AL: Yeah…but I can’t think of anything else.
KTPM: Okay I’m going to assume both of you have watched the Bill and Ted movies, ‘Excellent Adventure’ and ‘Bogus Journey’ ? Otherwise this last question is just going to sound really stupid.
AL&JM: Yes.
KTPM: Who do you think would win in a fight, Bill or Ted.
JM:……..I don’t know. I forget which one is which.
AL: Yeah that’s my problem.
KTPM: Ted was Keanu Reeves and Bill was Alex Winter.
JM: Oh! Okay Ted would win.
AL: Yeah.
KTPM: Reasoning?
AL: Because he’s badass.
JM: And he did the Matrix…and he’s Keanu Reeves.
AL: Bogus Journey…..what movie is that?
JM: ….Bill and Trav’s Bogus Journey Tour and you never saw that movie? You liar!
AL: I know but that’s all that I can think of.
JM: Death was the bald dude?
AL: I seriously don’t think I’ve ever seen it.
KTPM: And Rufus? He was played by George Carlin. He comes with his time machine from the future.
JM: We need to get a hold of that dude. I need to introduce Alex to that. You will love that movie.
AL: I don’t like Back To The Future.
JM: It’s not like that.
KTPM: It’s like a stoner surfer movie.
JM: What she said.
KTPM: Okay well that’s it. Thanks for sitting down. I know it was kind of last minute
JM: No problem. This was actually a really cool interview.
AL: Yeah, thanks for having us. We’d love to sit down with you another time if you have anymore questions.
